The Rare Earth elements are not that rare – but they can be hard to extract. Rare Earths have come to prominence because of their geochemical properties, for example an ability to store magnetic charge. According to Professor Woudhuysen, that makes them ideal for solving some of the biggest and potentially most profitable challenges of the next decade: the design of greener motors and batteries, lighting solutions and resilient components for machinery in increasingly hostile environments.
